In April 2010 the government announced the final structure of Feed-in Tariffs (FiTs) for small-scale generators. House-holders and communities who install low carbon electricity technology such as solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines up to 5 megawatts, will be paid for the electricity they generate, even if they use it themselves.
The level of payment depends on the technology and is linked to inflation. Ofgem will administer the FiT scheme and suppliers will be responsible for paying the reward to their customers.
Small-scale generators will receive a further payment of any electricity they feed into the grid. These payments will be in addition to benefitting from reduced bills as they decrease the need to buy electricity. The scheme will also apply to installations commissioned since July 2008, when the policy was announced.
The sector is currently awaiting a decision on the future of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which will offer payment for the generation of heat from renewable sources.
A&D Publishing is working on a new website covering FiTs, how the consumer can access the scheme and technologies and related topics. When a decision on the RHI has been made, the site will also cover this.
